Harvey, William Mawrey, Sergeant (Wireless Operator), 1582500, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve
William was the eldest son of William Howard (1902-1944) and Ethel Mary (née Wright, 1906-1981) Harvey. Born in 1924, he was the eldest son, with 4 siblings: Jean (b. 1926), John (b.1928), Bruce (b.1932) and Robin (b.1935). In 1939, his parents and the other children were lining in “Glenfarba”, 90 Borrowash Road, Spondon. William had already moved out and was living in Fleet Street, Derby working as an apprentice at an “Air Plane Factory”, presumably Rolls-Royce.
According to his school friend, Ken Porter, he “attended Spondon House Central School, and served in 2069 Squadron Air Training Corps before joining Bomber Command, Royal Air Force in 1943. He was stationed at RAF Blyton, HCU 1662, in Lincolnshire. He died on active service, 4 May 1944 (4 days before VE day) in a flying accident, when HP Halifax DB316 suffered engine problems, and crashed at Kirton-in-Lindsey, in Lincolnshire”. He is buried in Spondon Cemetery.
